Vehicle spare parts worth
over Rs 10 lakh went up in flames at Agarwada in Pernem taluka in a major blaze that engulfed a section of the house belonging to Chandrakant Narayan Kothawal on Sunday morning.
Though goods worth lakhs of rupees were destroyed, the fire fighters managed to save a major part of the stock estimated to be at Rs 20 lakh.
Fire station officer Namdev Parwar Pramod Gavandi led the team of firefighters including Vishal Patil, Avinash Naik, Sandesh Pernekar, Suraj Shetgaokar, Prakash Ghadi, Nilesh Mayekar, Yogesh Amonkar and saved the property from further damage.
Fortunately, no fatalities were reported as most of the members of house were away in Kolhapur following the death of a close relative. Chandrakant’s wife and daughter, who were in the house at the time of the incident, rushed out after they heard an explosion, reportedly from an inverter at around 11 am.
Soon after the explosion, a fire broke out on the first floor of the house where two-wheeler spare parts along with engine oil were stored. The wooden rafters along with Manglorean tiles came crashing down as a result.
The Pernem fire station was immediately informed about the incident by locals who witnessed smoke billowing out from the structure. Fire tenders were rushed in from Pernem and Mapusa and the fire was brought under control after two hours.
